Sandling Primary School

Spanish Overview

At Sandling Primary School, our Spanish curriculum is designed to inspire a love for language learning while embedding our Sandling PRACTISE values. Through the development of speaking, listening, reading, writing, and grammar skills, we cultivate problem solvers who navigate language challenges with confidence. The curriculum builds resilience as students practice and improve their proficiency. We foster an adventurous spirit by exploring Spanish-speaking cultures, and creativity is encouraged through engaging language activities. Collaborative tasks enhance teamwork, while independent assignments promote independence. As pupils develop their language skills, they gain self-assurance and confidence in their abilities. Understanding and using a new language enhances esteem, fostering respect for themselves and the diverse Spanish-speaking world.

What our pupils say about their Spanish learning

“We learnt new words such as ‘pero’, ‘y’ and ‘sé’ and ‘no sé’. We used these to tell our friends what we can do, can’t do and also use the conjunctions ‘but’ and ‘and’." Frankie – Year 3

“We have been learning about families in Spanish, and learnt how to say ‘la madre’ (mother), el padre (father), la abuela (grandmother) and el abuelo (grandfather)." Josh – Year 4

“In Spanish we have learnt how to count to 31. We also learnt the months of the year, which meant that I could say my birthday in Spanish. My birthday is in ‘julio’." Chloe – Year 5

“I enjoyed learning how to talk about different habitats and biomes in Spanish, and also learning about how we can look after the world. For example, we can use ‘menor plástico y menos agua’." Harrison – Year 6

Spanish Curriculum

Our Spanish curriculum caters for the three pillars of learning ensuring substantial progress in Spanish from the beginning of Year 3 to the end of Year 6.

The Three Pillars of language are:

  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Grammar

To ensure a progressive curriculum within these Three Pillars, and to build solid foundations in Spanish learning before leaving Year 6, we follow the scheme ‘Language Angels’.

Each unit of learning is also broken down into five key concepts:

  1. Speaking Skills
  2. Listening Skills
  3. Reading Skills
  4. Writing Skills
  5. Grammar Skills

All five concepts of Spanish are addressed throughout each unit.
