Sandling Primary School

RE Overview

At Sandling Primary School, our RE curriculum is designed to cultivate understanding and respect while instilling our Sandling PRACTISE values. Through concepts like believing, expressing, living, exploring, and connecting, we develop problem solvers who navigate diverse perspectives. The curriculum fosters resilience as pupils reflect on complex moral questions. We encourage an adventurous spirit by exploring various beliefs and practices, while creativity is nurtured through expressive activities. Collaborative discussions and projects enhance teamwork, while independent research and learning build independence. Presenting and discussing their beliefs boosts our pupils’ self-assurance. Understanding and connecting with different faiths and cultures promotes esteem, fostering respect for themselves and others in a diverse world.

What our pupils say about their RE learning

“I learnt that different people go to different places to pray and worship. These are called sacred places." Elliot – Year 1

“I enjoy RE because we get to learn about what different religions mean to people, and how people from different religions pray. We compared how Christians, Muslims and Hindu’s pray. The religions are all different in their own way, but there are lots of things that are similar too." Isabella – Year 3

“I enjoyed learning about Hinduism and learning about some of the Hindu Gods in more detail. I also found it interesting learning about Bar Mitzvahs and Bat Mitzvahs, which are celebrations in Judaism. A Bat Mitzvah takes place for girls when they turn 12 years old, and a Bar Mitzvah takes place for boys when they turn 13 years old, this is when they believe they have started their adulthood." Cyndia – Year 4

“Recently we have been learning about the 5 Pillars of Islam. In particular, I enjoyed learning about ‘fasting’ – this is a way to represent how less fortunate people may feel, this period of time is called Ramadan and there is a celebration at the end of the Ramanda called Eid al-Fitr." Grace – Year 5

“We learnt about the similarities and differences between Humanism and the main world religions. I learnt that the main principles for humanists are to be honest, and to do to other people what you would like them to do to you; which are very similar messages to the other religions that we have learnt about." Anna - Year 6

Our RE Curriculum

As a school we follow the locally agreed syllabus for Religious Education. We recognise that learning about religion and worldviews contributes dynamically to young people’s education by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.

Our curriculum for RE aims to ensure that all pupils develop religious literacy through concepts such as believing, Expressing and Living. These concepts run from Year R to Year 6 and enable our pupils to learn about religion and worldviews in local, national and global contexts through big questions.

See our ‘Progression of concepts’ document below which details the concepts that our children focus upon in RE and the reasoning behind their choice.
