Sandling Primary School

PSHE Overview

At Sandling Primary School, our PSHE curriculum is designed to foster holistic development and instil our Sandling PRACTISE values. Through concepts such as Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me, we cultivate problem solvers who navigate personal and social challenges. The curriculum builds resilience by teaching coping strategies and perseverance. We encourage an adventurous spirit by exploring diverse perspectives and experiences, while fostering creativity through reflective and expressive activities. Collaborative tasks promote teamwork, and individual projects develop independence. As pupils engage with the curriculum, they gain self-assurance and confidence in their abilities. Understanding themselves and others enhances esteem, fostering a respectful and inclusive community.

What our pupils say about their PSHE learning

“I like passing the jigsaw teddy around the class and talking about what Year 1 might be like." Bertie – Year R

“In PSHE we have a jigsaw ‘cushion’ to pass around. When we are holding the jigsaw ‘cushion’, that means it is our turn to talk and everyone else will listen. During the calming time, our teacher rings a chime bell and we close our eyes to help us calm down. I like that part too." Freya – Year 2

“In PSHE we were learning about how our bodies change, we have had quite a lot of conversations. I liked that we all felt comfortable talking about these changes." Isla – Year 3

“We learnt about sustainability in the world, and things that we are in control of, and things that we are not in control of. For example, in palm oil farming, it can be harmful for the environment if it is not done sustainably. We can’t change everything to do with palm oil, but we can think about what we choose to buy. Harry – Year 4

“I enjoyed learning about all the different body parts and how our bodies change as we get older and during puberty. Lucy – Year 6

Curriculum Overview

Pupils will develop the fundamental personal, social, health and emotional skills needed to underpin their development as young people and enable them to thrive in society. Throughout our PSHE curriculum, pupils will develop their ability to:

  • understand the ever changing world around them
  • understand how to keep themselves safe and healthy
  • form positive relationships
  • develop tolerance and understanding for others
  • understand their feelings, emotions and changes happening to their bodies
  • facilitate themselves to develop their own positive mental health.

Within PSHE, pupils will also develop an understanding of British Values and the Protected Characteristics. As a school, we follow the scheme ‘JIGSAW’.

Concepts

We teach our pupils PSHE through a curriculum which progresses through concepts such as ‘Being me in my world’ and ‘Celebrating Difference’. These concepts ensure that children’s knowledge and skills are carefully planned and built upon as they move from Year R to Year 6.
