PE Overview
At Sandling Primary School, our PE curriculum is designed to promote physical fitness and instil our Sandling PRACTISE values. Through activities such as dance, gymnastics, invasion games, net games, and striking and fielding games, we develop problem solvers who strategize and adapt in dynamic environments. The curriculum builds resilience as pupils face physical challenges and improve their skills. We encourage an adventurous spirit by exploring diverse sports and physical activities, while fostering creativity through expressive movement and innovative game play. Collaborative team sports enhance teamwork, while individual activities promote independence. As pupils master new skills, they gain self-assurance and confidence. Understanding the importance of physical health and cooperation enhances esteem, fostering a positive self-image and respect for others.
What our pupils say about their PE learning
“I like the animal game in PE. The teacher calls out an animal name and we have to pretend to be that animal. The snake is always the hardest animal to be!" Ted – Year R |
“I really enjoyed playing tennis in PE. We learned about having really quick feet and being able to move quickly to get the ball!" Jude – Year 2 |
“II have really enjoyed cricket this year. We have practised our throwing, bowling and fielding. We then put these skills together to play matches against each other. I liked netball too, I learnt how to pivot. This is where you need to keep one foot on the ground and swing your body around. It is important to keep one foot on the ground though!" Lucas – Year 4 |
“I enjoyed the sports where we got to work as a team. I also got to try lots of sports that I don’t play outside of school such as rugby and badminton." Ksenia – Year 5 |
“We developed communication and teamwork skills to win the games in our basketball unit. We learnt about using a fast break to attack quickly, and I was really good at the V cut move to create space for myself." Sid – Year 6 |
PE Curriculum
Within our PE curriculum, we focus upon three pillars of progression:
- Physically competent, physically active.
‘A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport….Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities. Pupils are physically active for sustained periods of time.’
- Tactics and strategies, decision maker, creative and competitive.
‘Engage in competitive sports and activities. Become physically confident.
Know, apply and understand …. matters, skills and processes.’
- I can, I want to, I will.
‘Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect. Lead healthy, active lives.’
Concepts
We teach these three domains through a curriculum which progresses through concepts such as Athletics, Dance and Invasions Games. These concepts ensure that children’s practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge is carefully planned and is built upon as they move from Year R to Year 6.
