Music Overview
At Sandling Primary School, our music curriculum is crafted to nurture creativity and our PRACTISE values through a comprehensive approach. By engaging students in performing, listening, composing, exploring dimensions of music, and studying the history of music, we develop problem solvers who navigate musical challenges. The curriculum builds resilience as students practice and refine their skills. We encourage an adventurous spirit by exploring diverse musical genres and creativity through composition. Group performances and projects enhance teamwork, while solo tasks foster independence. As students gain confidence in performing and presenting their compositions, they develop self-assurance. Exploring music history and dimensions of music helps them appreciate their own and others' contributions, fostering esteem.
What our pupils say about their Music learning
“We do lots of singing in our class, Miss Gill likes to sing with us!" Theon – Year R |
“We learnt to play the ocarina in music. There are four different holes and we had to use our fingers to cover the holes whilst we blew into it. London’s Burning was my favourite song to play." Clara – Year 2 |
“I found it quite interesting learning about motifs this year. A motif is a tune of notes to play. I enjoyed playing these on the glockenspiel." Felix – Year 4 |
“I enjoyed listening to music from South Africa, and then recording what we did and didn’t like about it. I had never really heard music similar to it before, so I really liked hearing a new style of music." Ava – Year 5 |
“We got to learn about lots of different composers and musicians who made their own music such as Mozart and the Beatles. We then got to compose and perform our own music. I really enjoyed it." Liza – Year 6 |
Music Concepts
In our Music curriculum, we organise our learning into five key concepts
- Performing
Performance involves students playing instruments or singing (either solo or as an ensemble). It builds musical skills, teamwork, confidence, and communication. Through regular practice and diverse genres, students will express creativity, encouraging a love for music and refining coordination.
- Listening
Active listening sharpens auditory perception. Students explore varied musical styles, from classical to pop, honing concentration and communication skills. They learn to appreciate different instruments, melodies, and rhythms, fostering a deeper understanding and connection to music.
- Composing
Composing involves students creating their music. They experiment with melodies, rhythms, and harmonies, fostering creativity. Examples include crafting original songs or collaborating on simple compositions, developing problem-solving skills and a profound appreciation for musical structure
- The Dimensions of Music
The inter-related dimensions of music explore the connections between key elements: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and musical notation. Students may experiment with varying tempos in a musical piece, distinguish different instrument sounds or analyse the structure of a song, deepening their comprehension of musical concepts
- The History of Music
Studying the history of music involves exploring diverse musical traditions, genres, and influential composers. Students learn about the evolution of instruments and styles, connecting with cultural contexts. Examples include discovering classical masterpieces, jazz origins, and the impact of iconic musicians.
We teach these concepts through a curriculum which ensures that children’s practical, theoretical and disciplinary knowledge is carefully planned and is built upon as they move from Year R to Year 6.
