Sandling Primary School

Mathematics Overview

At Sandling Primary School, our mathematics curriculum is thoughtfully designed to foster a deep understanding of mathematical concepts while instilling key values. We develop problem solvers by encouraging students to tackle challenging problems and apply logical thinking. Our curriculum promotes resilience as students persevere through difficulties and learn from mistakes. We nurture an adventurous spirit by exploring diverse mathematical ideas and real-world applications, and creativity through open-ended investigations. Collaborative tasks enhance teamwork, while independent work builds independence. As students gain confidence in their mathematical skills, they become more self-assured in their abilities. Mastering mathematical concepts boosts esteem, helping students appreciate their progress and the broader relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

What our pupils say about their mathematics learning

“I have learnt how to count to 5.” Elsie, Year R

“I have enjoyed learning how to make 5. I know that 2 and 3 makes five and I used counters to help me.” Bertie, Year 1

“I enjoyed learning to count in 3s which is new for us. We used tens frames to help us.” Amelia, Year 2

“This term I have enjoyed learning my 3 times tables. I like the songs that Mr Yates puts on for us and when we have to say the next times table. Times Table Rockstars has helped me to learn them too!” Caleb, Year 3

“I have enjoyed learning about Roman numerals and finding out about how letters can be used as numbers. Working with number lines makes it easier for me to locate numbers too.” Xander, Year 4

“We’ve learnt about millions and hundred-thousands. I enjoyed this because it is the first time we have covered larger numbers. I used place value charts to help me.” Felix, Year 5

“In Maths, I have been enjoying practicing column multiplication. I find working out in my head tricky so I like using written methods to help me find the answer.” Isla, Year 6

How do we teach mathematics at Sandling?

At Sandling Primary School, effective maths learning is characterised by a mastery approach that integrates cohesion, variation, mathematical thinking, fluency, and representation. Lessons are carefully structured with small, manageable steps that ensure all students meet the learning objectives. This is achieved through a dynamic ping-ponging interaction between teacher and students, enhancing engagement and understanding. Variation is a key element, as teachers design activities and questions that start from the target problem and work backwards, using intelligent practice to scaffold learning. Non-examples and challenging problems are used to deepen students' mathematical thinking and encourage independent problem-solving. Teachers and students actively use reasoning and mathematical vocabulary, with techniques such as stem sentences and effective questioning to enhance conceptual understanding. Visual aids such as bar models and part-whole diagrams are used to help students 'see' the maths in problems, while concrete and pictorial methods are employed before moving to abstract calculations. Fluency is developed through rapid recall of number facts, with explicit connections made to reinforce these skills. This comprehensive approach ensures that children build a solid foundation in mathematics through both practical and conceptual understanding.

Mathematics is taught daily across the school. EYFS use the Mastering Number programme for 4 lessons a week in terms 1-4 with one White Rose session a week to cover shape, space and measure topics. In terms 5 and 6, this will become 3 White Rose sessions per week and Mastering Number will become a 10 minute review sessions to help prepare the children for Year 1. Children in Key Stage 1 and 2 have a daily lesson following the White Rose scheme of learning. Small step lesson overviews from White Rose are used to sequence and support our weekly planning but these are adapted to suit the needs of our pupils. All lessons begin with a short recap of previous learning in the format of a ‘Flashback 4’. Lessons will also include a 10 minute fluency session and teachers in Years 1, 2, 4 and 5 use the NCETM Mastering Number programme.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 have a login for Times Table Rock Stars which they can use both in school and at home. A ten minute session on TTRS will be set weekly for pupils to complete as part of their Maths Home Learning but additional practise is also welcome.
